How to Develop Collaborative Skills Within Teams

Whether you are merging two teams from different departments as part of a restructure or bringing people together from diverse areas to work collaboratively, it is vital to manage the dynamics effectively. There are several interesting ways of getting people from different teams to work together and build relationships in a fun but practical way. Check out these team building tips.

Get the Culture Right

One of the most important things to do when encouraging teams to work collaboratively is to review the culture. Requesting that each team do a cultural audit is an effective way of establishing starting points and key differences so you can work on bridging the gaps together. This helps develop the vision for the new way of working, articulates what is expected of each team member, and sets the ground rules. Don’t forget to allow time for a new culture within the team to embed.

Develop the Vision

Once you have teams beginning to work together and getting to know each other, start building the team vision so there is clarity about the future. Take the team away from the workplace so they feel more relaxed and start thinking creatively about the new way of working. You can combine an offsite venue with team building exercises so that you are continually facilitating relationship building while simultaneously growing the team vision. By getting the team to build that vision with you, you’ll strengthen the bond between members and get a sense of ownership for the new way of working. Don’t forget to be on the lookout for undiscovered talent from team members you may not have previously managed, and think about how they can lead and develop initiatives within the new way of working.

Use Corporate Team Building Ideas

There are several ways of getting teams to work as one using a corporate team building approach. Select a challenge such as an outdoor assault course or orienteering – the more creative the challenge, the better. One of the more innovative team-building exercises is the Escape Room Game. Escape rooms are physical adventure games in which players solve a series of puzzles using clues, hints, and strategy to complete the objectives at hand. Players are given a set time limit to unveil the secret plot in order to escape the room. Escape room games are a fun and simple way of building key relationships and team abilities. For an even greater challenge, split existing teams into different ones. This will also help strengthen relationships between those who do not normally work together.

Keep the Momentum Going

Once you have started getting teams to work together, make sure you keep the momentum going with a specific mission, project deliverables, and meeting dates. Ask them how they’d like to continue working together and determine whether any developmental coaching is needed. Look for gaps in skill sets and work collaborative to fill them, but keep the pace moving so people fuse as one team and start to produce results. Don’t forget to celebrate the successes of the new team to encourage them to continue.
